Mini Dental Implants

All the advantages of implants in general but with shorter healing time and lower costs

If you are not happy with your dentures or are missing one or more teeth due to injury or illness, you may want to consider mini dental implants.

For patients who don’t want the invasive surgery necessary for conventional dental implants, such as the All-On-Four procedure, or who lack the bone mass in their jaws to hold them, mini dental implants may be the perfect solution. As their name implies, mini dental implants are smaller and are best suited for patients who require stabilization of lower jaw dentures, pre-molar teeth, or a missing tooth that was located in a narrow area. About Mini Dental Implants

What is the mini dental implants procedure?

Over the past few years, mini dental implants have emerged as an attractive alternative to conventional implants. As you would expect, mini dental implants are smaller than regular implants and range in size from 1.8 mm to approximately 3 mm versus the conventional implant diameter of 3.75 mm.

The placement procedure is also different. Posts are used to anchor the device in place and then the implants are anchored to the gums. Mini implants are solid throughout and do not contain a screw like traditional dental implants. Existing dentures can be attached to the posts, unlike conventional implants that usually require a newly fitted dental appliance.

Mini dental implants can be placed and loaded in a single day, during one appointment, with a general dentist who is certified in the procedure.

What are the benefits of mini dental implants?

Mini dental implants have all the advantages of implants in general, but, as their name implies, they are smaller and can be placed without complex surgery. Because the procedure is less invasive, with less disturbance to the bone and tissue, healing time is reduced from months to days and most patients need only over-the-counter pain medication for a short time following surgery. In fact, many patients find they can eat normally the same afternoon.

Further, mini implants, like conventional implants, integrate with the bone tissue to prevent facial collapse that can occur with bone loss. When teeth are missing, the stimulus provided by the teeth chewing down on the bone vanishes. This causes atrophying of the jawbone in the region of the missing teeth. Dental implants restore much or all of that chewing power and prevent bone loss.

Some people considering dental implants may not have the bone structure to support the implants and therefore require a bone grafting procedure. Mini implants, fortunately due to their small size, can be used in cases where the bone is not thick enough and without requiring bone grafting.

Finally, mini implants cost about half as much as regular dental implants, primarily due to the fact the procedure does not require surgery or bone grafting.

Who should consider mini dental implants?

Mini implants support most types of replacement teeth, including dentures, bridges and fixed crowns, and are also suitable for securing loose and lower arch dentures.

If you are not happy with your dentures or are missing one or more teeth due to injury, disease or tooth decay, you may be a candidate for mini dental implants. Call Advanced Dental Care to learn more and schedule a free consultation.
